The CRES Amateur Radio Club held a dinner meeting at Kristino's Pizza, 220 Granville St, Gahanna, on Wednesday 11 June 2003. The meeting was called to order by President David Jeffords/K8ON at 7:15 PM. Those in attendance were: KD8WK, K9RV, K8ON, K8AX, K8NU, K8RSP, K8KJ, N8ZOG, KC8TM, KB8DEO, NV7X, N9CX, WD8EBS, WA8LBZ, W8FMN, and KC8HIH. David recognized Mike Stansbery/WD8EBS for his recent upgrade to Extra class, and Stu Steenburgh/KB8DEO for his recent upgrade to General. Rob Stampfli/KD8WK reported that the w8zpf.cmhnet.org domain, where the club minutes are kept and our email exploder resides, has been unreachable from the internet since Sunday. Apparently, an upstream ISP, coil.com, has failed. Our provider is arranging to change over to another upstream ISP and expects for the transition to be complete by Friday, but until it is done, access to the w8zpf.cmhnet.org web and email exploder will not be possible. Tricia Kovacs/KC8HIH indicated she had been contacted by Hal Smith who needs help with repairing the Central Ohio Radio Reading Service radios for the blind. This was a function the club had performed in the past at Lucent. Hal has been busy in other aspects of CORRS and would appreciate help with getting broken radios back in service. He can be reached at 740 927 9219 or by email at hcs927@aol.com. The bulk of the rest of the meeting concerned Field Day planning. Refer to the 22 May Executive Committee meeting for previously arranged details, which will not be reproduced here. Field Day will be the last weekend in June: June 28th and 29th. It was announced that Lucent has declined to allow us the use of their back acreage so we had to move the Field Day site to another location. Mike Rauh/NV7X will host this year's event at his home near Winchester Pike and Ebright roads on the southeast side of the Columbus metro area. Mike's driveway is just east of the Grove's Park entrance off Winchester Pike. It is a graveled drive. Park in front of or next to the garage. This will be a particularly challenging setup, as we have not operated from the location previously, and will undoubtedly have to improvise some aspects of the setup on Saturday morning. One station will be set up in Mike's garage, and the other on the side porch. Mike related that there will be a cookout at the Field Day site for Field Day participants and their family. The club will provide meat items and soft drinks, and participants are asked to bring table service and a snack or potluck side item. The cookout will be at 6 PM Saturday. Those interested are invited to meet for breakfast at the Bob Evans, Gender Rd and SR 33, on Saturday 28 June at 9 AM. Setup will begin at 10 AM at Mike's. The issue of the power generator is still up in the air: Several people have offered us the use of their larger, louder, power-hungry 4-5KW generators, and a few have offered us the use of smaller generators that may not be big enough for the task. Al Mecozzi/ WA8LBZ, agreed to look into options for acquiring a suitable unit. The following people have (either here or at the prior Executive Committee meeting) offered equipment on loan for the cause: K8RSP Kenwood TS-430S for the voice rig KD8ZG Kenwood TS-520S for the CW rig K8ON Backup rig WD8EBS 2 Meter rig and PSK station K8RSP, KC8TM, W8FMN Computers for logging K8ON Press release and result reporting KD8WK, K8ON 30 ft extensible pole for antennas KD8WK, K8RSP Antenna tuners K8RSP Digital pictures for our records Jerry Scott/K9RV suggested that the local police be pre-notified of our activities so that they are aware of what will be going on. Other suggestions from those seasoned Field Day operators included: Bring your own lawn chairs, fans, bug repellent and CW keyers and keys. Several members related interesting stories fondly remembered from former Field Day sessions. Al asked a question about which CQ Magazine DX Zone we in central Ohio were located in. Jerry and Carl agreed we were in zone 4. Mike gave a brief synopsis of the new PSK mode, PSK63, which he thinks may eventually replace RTTY. Dave Woolf announced that our next VE Exam session will be at the Columbus Hamfest, Voice of Aladdin Shrine Temple, which we think will be held the first Saturday in August, 2003. Several additional small discussions ensued, including: + A mention of BPL (Broadband over Power Lines) and its potential to cause interference in the form of raised noise levels on the HF bands. + A discussion of the new apparent new Bush administration mandate to the FCC to revisit the issue of spectrum allocation and its potential impact on ham radio. + The soon-to-be release 60 meter ham band (or rather, the five 2.8Khz channels that will be release for ham use on 3 July). The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 PM. Respectfully submitted, Rob Stampfli CRES-ARC Secretary/Treasurer
