The CRES Amateur Radio Club held a general membership meeting on Thursday, 18 December 2008, at the New Albany library. The following members were in attendance: Bill Erwin / N9CX Dave Brown / K8AX Tricia Kovacs / KC8HIH Al Mecozzi / WA8LBZ Dave Blake / N4DB Steven Katz / N8WL Bob Kenyon / K8LJ Steven Pezzi / K8PEZ Bob Cartwright / W3CRZ George Kinder / KC8DJR Fred Saas / WA8PGE Art Grandle / KD8ZG Dave Woolf / K8RSP Doug Gibbs / W8NFT David Jeffords / K8ON The following guests were in attendance: Mike Mickelson / KD8DZ Kevin Lewis / KD8JWD Wally Blackburn / AA8DX Larry Foster / K8BBQ Bob Perdue James Elliott / KC8NMI Pete Elliott / W8KRR The meeting was called to order by President Bill Erwin at 7:00 PM. At this time, Bill passed out tickets for a mystery drawing to be held later in the meeting. Our visitors were introduced. A call for corrections to the minutes from the last meeting were requested. None were given. Dave Woolf gave the following Treasurer's report for Rob Stampfli: We currently have: $ 7,534.23 in Telhio CDs $ 1,091.33 in our Telhio Checking/Savings accounts $ 142.39 in our cash account $ 30.00 in undeposited checks ------------------- $ 8,797.95 We have 41 active members, of which 11 have already renewed for 2009. Our 2008 annual budget was initially set at $630. So far this year we have taken in $1,321.94 and expended $1,158.56. Dave Woolf said he would collect dues at the meeting. Dave Woolf reported that the repeater is running fine. Art Grandle reported the VE team gave exams at the Parkview Presbyterian Church on December 6th. There were 11 VEs present, 4 people took examinations and 3 passed. There will be another VE session in April. Old Business: None. New Business: Dave Brown reported that the Southwest Ohio Digital and Technical Symposium will be held on Saturday, January 10th 2009, at the Middletown Ohio campus of Miami University. This is an ARRL sanctioned conference that has been held annually for over 20 years. There is a line-up of technical presentations as well as several live demonstrations. Bill Erwin, N9CX, will give one of the presentations with a version of his talk on microcomputer control of satellite antenna positioning. See December 2008 QST, page 96, for more information on the symposium. Dave Brown will send e-mail to the club in early January about car pooling to the symposium. Club officer elections. Rob Stampfli was the single member of the election committee this year. Rob could not attend the meeting, so Bill Erwin presented the following slate of candidates along with an invitation for other nominations from the floor: Treasurer: Bob Cartwright, W3CRZ Secretary: Rob Stampfli, KD8WK Vice President: Bob Kenyon, K8LJ President: Bill Erwin, N9CX There were no nominations from the floor. Art Grandle made a motion that the club accept these candidates for the club officer positions. Dave Blake seconded the motion. All members approved the motion. The mystery drawing was held. David Jeffords won a CD containing photographs of the W8ZPF 2008 Field Day operations. The business portion of the meeting was closed and Bob Kenyon, K8LJ, gave a PowerPoint presentation on transmission lines. Bob talked about and showed a variety of coaxial connectors, defined non-resonant and resonant transmission lines, explained how incident and reflected waves formed a standing wave that in turn defines the Standing Wave Ratio (SWR). Bob explained the origin of the Smith Chart and how it can be used to replace complex mathematical transmission line calculations. In particular, Bob explained how the Smith Chart can be used to design a stub matching section to match an antenna to a particular transmission line impedance. Bob concluded his presentation with a demonstration of TLDetails, a marvelous and free software program that shows you SWR and power loss for a user supplied transmission line type and terminating (antenna) impedance. Bob answered questions before concluding his talk. The meeting was adjourned a little before 9:30 PM Minutes submitted by Dave Brown / K8AX
